  1. "What laptop should I get?" is a question asked on this section of yahoo answers about once every 20 minutes it seems especially now since it’s back to school time. I know it’s not your question but the first thing I always ask is "Do you really really really really really need a laptop?" If you absolutely need to have it in class or are going to be taking it on trips and NEED to be mobile then you need a laptop. However if you don’t need it for a specific mobility reason (I’m on the road 1 of 5 days of the year) start looking to purchase a desktop or better yet if you have some computer experience and are the hands on type, build your own! They are less prone to a whole host of problems that laptops/notebooks are prone to. The parts are less expensive they’re easier to fix yourself, there’s more general support on forums and groups, and you can get yourself an incredibly powerful desktop along with a nice monitor for much less than $1000. Desktops are more easily upgradable and don’t overheat or break as easily as laptops do. The fact of the matter is 1/4 to 1/5 of laptops no matter PC or MAC, dell or sony, imac or acer will have some type of major issue which means someone has to fix it. Since you’ll void your warranty if you crack it open yourself it may mean possibly having to sending it away (in my experience up to a month)…and i know I can’t hate being without my PC for that long.
Take a look at the following article about laptop reliability:

If you’re interested in putting a PC together try these two sites to get you started:

Good luck, have a blast at school!

  2. It still depends. A lot of students enjoy laptops because of the mobility. They can pick it up and take it to class, to the library when studying, sit outside with it, etc.

I like desktops simply because I rarely have the need for a portable computer, but when I go off to college I will definitely be investing in a laptop. I’ll bring my desktop along too.

Laptops are getting so cheap these days that you could really buy a modest desktop PC for your room and a modest laptop and still be spending less than $1000-1200 if you shop around.

If you don’t know for sure, then I would say a laptop.

  3. probably laptop seeing as they are portable which is what you would want in a college setting. and they can do everything a desktop can, plus on average they use less power than a desktop

  4. i would STRONGLY suggest buying a mac not anything windows

  5. It depends on an individual preference, but budget is the most crucial factors in acquiring a computer. Next is comfort and convenience.

    - Think About It!

  6. As a long time desktop user I am obliged to say that the only advantage of a laptop is the mobility of it. However unless mobility is an EXTREMELY important issue for you go with a desktop.

Yes the above answers were right because lap tops can do ALMOST everything that a desktop can do but you will notice that they wont get you the same bang for your buck. You can get a lot better quality and much better functioning hardware on a desktop then you can on a laptop for a fraction of the cost.

  7. laptop advantages: you can take it anywhere w/ you, the new laptops that are coming out have wifi capability so if your school offers wifi you can get on the internet with it (plus most coffee shops, airports and a few malls nowadays have wifi as well).
disadvantages: harder to upgrade computer parts than a desktop computer, easier to lose/get stolen.
