Protecting American Muslims
The Attorney General released the following statement relating to Obama’s historic speech today in Cairo, Egypt:
"The President’s pledge for a new beginning between the United States and the Muslim community takes root here in the Justice Department where we are committed to using criminal and civil rights laws to protect Muslim Americans. A top priority of this Justice Department is a return to robust civil rights enforcement and outreach in defending religious freedoms and other fundamental rights of all of our fellow citizens in the workplace, in the housing market, in our schools and in the voting booth.
"There are those who will continue to want to divide by fear — to pit our national security against our civil liberties — but that is a false choice. We have a solemn responsibility to protect our people while we also protect our principles."
"A top priority of this Justice Department is a return to robust civil rights enforcement" — as if civil rights were trampled from 2001 to 2009.
And if you wish he would issue a statement on protecting Americans from the Islamic jihad, you’re just continuing "to want to divide by fear."
Back Off!
Remember that time when we had a wall between the FBI
and the CIA, and then 9/11 happened, and then we all
concluded that the only thing dumber than fighting a terrorist war via
law enforcement was doing it badly? Good times:
However, politics have proved
obstructive to all facets of counterterrorism policy. And politics may
have been at play in the Muhammad case as well as in other cases
involving Black Muslim converts… STRATFOR heard from sources that the FBI and other law enforcement organizations had been ordered to "back off" of counterterrorism investigations into the activities of Black Muslim converts. At this point, it is unclear to us if that guidance was given by the White House or the Department of Justice, or if it was promulgated by the agencies themselves, anticipating the wishes of

Many FBI supervisors are
reluctant to authorize investigations that they believe may have
negative blow-back on their career advancement. In light of this
institutional culture, and the order to be careful in investigations
relating to Black Muslim converts, it would not be at all surprising to
us if a supervisor refused to authorize a full-field investigation of
Muhammad that would have included surveillance of his activities.. . Had the FBI opened a full-field investigation on Muhammad, and had it
conducted surveillance on him, it would have been able to watch him
participate in preoperational activities such as conducting surveillance
of potential targets and obtaining weapons.
You’ll be heartened to know that America’s national security isn’t totally compromised. The FBI presumably still has carte blanche to conduct five year witch hunts against leading American Jews. On account of the acute threat that they pose, you see.
And of course it’s unfair to blame the FBI’s
abject failure just on institutional culture. At least some of it
probably has to do with how they’ve
embraced Obama’s pre-9/11 mindset
and mused about shifting agents away from counterterrorism. At least
Obama hasn’t made the remaining ones our front line of defense.
Obama Flunks American History 101
Speaking at the University of
Cairo, Obama said that Americans are indebted
to Islam for the great contributions Muslims have made to the history
and development of the United States.
"I know that Islam has always been a part of America’s story," Obama told the throng of unenlightened Muslims. "The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco… and since our founding, American Muslims have enriched the United States."
Obama went on to say: "They [Muslims] have fought in our wars. They have served in our government. They have stood for civil rights. They have started businesses. They have taught at our
universities. They’ve excelled in our sports arenas. They’ve won Nobel Prizes, built our tallest building and lit the Olympic torch. And when the first Muslim American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same holy Koran that one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, kept in his personal library."
No one at the Egyptian University or the international media took
issue with Obama’s bizarre interpretation of American history,
let alone his
