New bookshelves and a climbing toddler?

November 20, 2009

We were given some new (old, but new to us) bookshelves from a friend and are wondering if we should worry about attaching them to the walls. I know that it's one of the standard baby proofing steps to secure bookshelves to the wall, but I don't know if we really need to or not. Our "baby" is 17 months old and has been learning his/our limits really well. Should we bold/screw them to the walls, or no? What do you think?

  1. Do you watch your son?

I have 3 standing fish tanks, multiple book shelves, a wall unit, glass Trophy cabinet, and I could go on all week.
Nothing is screwed into the wall here. Because our children are watched, and redirected when they go near things they shouldn’t.

I baby proof, don’t get me wrong, but I am not drilling holes into my furniture *just in case*
If I can have 5 boys, and not need to go to that extreme I don’t think you need to do it for 1 child. It seems so extreme to me, What ever happened to just saying *No* ……

  2. Well, it all depends on where it’s at and how into climbing he is. :) It’s not hard to attach the bookshelf to the wall, home depot or wal mart sells the attachments. I would go ahead and do so, just to be on the safe side.

  3. Yes I def would. You can buy the anchors that go on furniture. Better safe than sorry. Just a couple weeks ago in Tulsa OK. A flat screen T.V. fell on a 1 1/2 year old boy and killed him. I know that is blunt but it takes 5 min to prevent something like that.

  4. of course you should! my son was 4 when i put a book shelf in his room and i still attached it to the wall..all mine are attached to the wall…even his dresser is!

thank god my tv is up on the wall securely mounted!!!

  5. we have a bookshelf in our son’s room, and before he was even born we bolted it to the wall. as a precaution, i think you should.

  6. Yes! You should. If something ever did happen, you’d regret not doing it, especially since you considered it. Might as well… Better to be safe than sorry because that can really injure your child!

  7. If you do, make sure you put anchors in the wall first before you put in any screws. If baby decides to attempt a climb, it will lessen the chance that the wall surrounding the attachment will crack or become otherwise damaged. Even children who are familiar with their limits can be adventurous. Securing an unsteady, heavy object sounds like a good precaution. Good luck!

  8. GREAT question. It depends on your child. Our daughter never pulled on or attempted to climb book shelves. I know some people who had to attach them with high end wall anchors due to climbing. If your baby requires it, then yes, be safe and do it.
