Light or Dark Wood Furniture?
February 19, 2010
Moving into an apartment next week, white walls, white blinds, beige carpet, oak colored cabinets. Should I pick light or dark wood furniture? Dark wood fits my personality better (traditional) but I don't think I would like all dark wood through out the apartment. What are the pro's and con's of each type of wood. Also, can I mix and match? light in the bedroom, dark in the living room / dining area or vice versa.
No decorating sense whatsoever would welcome any/all opinions.

i buy whatever i like. however keep in mind that dark furniture will make a room feel more crowded so if you have small rooms maybe consider a medium or light tone. but with all the white walls etc…you probably will be ok with dark anyway.
hi, in my humble opinion it’s best to have one type in one room …that said, the answer to your question in my opinion is yes you can mix and match but try not to do that in the same room. of course this rule isnt set in stone
and yeah i can understand you not wanting just one type for the *entire* apartment. best wishes
I have mostly off-white walls in my house and a prevalence of medium oak cabinets, flooring, etc., with a few pieces of medium pecan mixed in. Seems to work well. You might want to think about a lighter oak for your place, like a honey oak, The thing is you can mix with other types of wood in furniture, but I would stay away from any dark stuff like mahogany. You can also get oak furniture in a distressed version which will also give you some variety.
I had the same problem, i got for the first time a bark wood kitchen set (very pretty) BUT, if some one puts the chair in to hard it leaves a mark on the chair, i had to go to lowels and get a marker to fix the mark , i wish i got a lite wood set i never had a problem. i also went with dark wood in living room . now i am selling every thing so i can go and get lite wood. well i found out the hard way but it is up to you.
GO WITH LITE WOOD!!!
Sounds like you’re already on the right track. Buy what you like, there’s no set rule, and mixing in different rooms is fine. We have mostly med. tone wood, not really dark, like medium oak, etc. and some darker pieces. The only light we have is in a lanaui, it’s actually rattan.
I would select the wood color that is most in contrast with the other colors in your apartment. So, if you have maple cabinets, for example, I would choose a dark walnut wood color to offset it. Contrast makes it all look good.
