should the minimum memory left on it be 1 GB?
They will only use it for email and some researching.

  1. According to a lot of experts, a computer is one of those things best purchased new… After buying the computer and shipping, you’ll spend a couple hundred dollars. You could probably get a newer, faster, better system at walmart for under $300. You might even get a printer tossed in. Plus, a lot of circuit cities are going out of business, so you could find a deal. Lastly, go to woot.com and tigerdirect.com, they both have great computer deals – I’ve seen new systems for as low as $150 (for just the computer).

Computers do burn out, and a used one will just burn out faster. Even if it costs you an extra $50-75, getting a faster, newer computer that includes all the software you need and will last your family for years will be worth the investment.

On a personal note, I bought a couple computers on e-bay a few years ago to set up a home network (already had other computers) I got them from two different sellers, neither were as advertised, I returned one and got another from another seller and it was also not as advertised and not working properly. Sometimes they’ll do something like shove some extra memory inside but it will be in a dead slot so they can say it has that amount, but it really doesn’t.

  2. still look for a dual core if the budget allows, 2gb of ram – 80gb hard drive – this way at least its capable of running vista and it will last for a few years

  3. On E-bay you get what you pay for. It is false economy to buy a cheap second hand unit. you may find that you will be paying out more in repairs and setup. Also by buying new you will have the G/tee for a years piece of mind. It is not only the memory you have to think about. it is also the size of the CPU also the graphics’s and sound and size of hard drive. All have to be considered when buying. Get advice and buy new.

  4. this should depend on your budget; but a dual core should be ok; I’d go for Open Source operating system because it’s free or cheap if you order a CD; it’s a pain to configure if you’re not a Linux expert or if you don’t like searching for solutions…

If budget is too low but a Pentium 4 with 512MB Memory (RAM) but try to have a large Hard Drive space (80 GB) would be fine.

  5. 1) The disks. Many people end up without the disks for software when they want to reinstall, especially the Windows installation disks. So if their Windows gets trashy after 2 or 3 years, you either buy them a new desktop, buy the Windows disks, or pay someone to reinstall Windows (but you still need legitimate Windows and other software disks). Put a priority on computers that sell with the disks for legitimacy reasons as well.

    2) The seller reputation. An eBay feedback rating of 90 – 95% is terrible.

    3) Shipment tracking.

    4) You do not necessarily need an entire GB of memory based upon your needs of research and email. I would lower that to 512MB.

    5) Windows XP. I realize that MAC’s have the better hardware. But the PC customers have alot more variety available in the way of software. So when you want a typing tutor program, for example, everything will be compatible.

    6) It would be nice if someone would wipe the Windows clean for you prior to purchase.

    7) Get a nice, flat-screen monitor.

    8) And for you, if you could start learning one program, let that be a fiewall program. Sometimes your DSL router will be what you use to keep their PC experiences cleaner. You may want to do your own research, and buy a parent-friendly firewall program.

    9) If you price any new computers, be sure and consider your local mom-and-pop computer shop. Normally you can get reasonable help locally without having to call India or the Philippines. If you buy an HP or a Dell, trouble calls go to other countries. Not only is their English an earsore, but their knowledge is so far below the average American’s that it is a huge waste of time for the consumer.

  6. Save yourself lots of frustration and get an Apple computer like iMac or one of their notebooks. You do not have time for all the hassles a Windows machine will give you–believe me, I know. I have had both Apple’s and Windows for over 25 years and Apple is simpler and more stable.

  7. Macs are great computers that can also run Windows, Linux, as well as OS X.Because the hardware is so tightly integrated with all aspects of the software, the computing experience is awesome… but that’s just an opinion.

  8. think if you’re going into best buy, a mac is probably the way to go, but if you’re going to build your own machine, if you spend the amount of money on a pc that you would have a mac, then you can build a much better system. pcs are built more for low end use, but that doesn’t mean they all are.
