How do I stop my cat from hanging out under the computer desk?
February 8, 2010
The cat in question has been doing this since a month ago, and it was cute at first, but now it's gotten to the point where it is annoying. He even tries to pull my optical mouse off the back of the desk (How ironic is that?). He is more than half a year old (born on July 10th last year). Extracting him only makes him come back again...and again. Can anyone help?

probably the attention he receives from going down there, wether good or bad, is what he actually craves. Ignore him and hide the mouse a few time and maybe he will stop. Also, try spending some time with him before you go on the computer so he will feel better. I would also give him alternate entertainment, such as a toy, treat, or katnip…something that he like s and will keep him busy while you are on the computer. That worked for my dog, which somehow always was ending up under there too! She is quietly chewing her treat next to me…. I gave it to her right before I went online.
I had a similar problem with my cats and the Christmas tree, they would get under it and then tear stuff down. I found that putting a jar of vicks under the tree kept them at bay, since cats HATE they way it smells. Cats also seem to not like to walk on aluminum foil.
Accidentaly kick her every once and a while, he’ll notice it is uncomfortable, and he’ll probably stop, make it as uncomfortable as possible
I think you can buy sprays that are meant to deter cats from gardens. You could try using one of those? But first i would check that the spray or whatever doesnt harm furniture or animals and that you can use it indoors.
i had this same problem with my cats, mittens and mr. snickers. people been telling me to use a super soaker to keep them off the refrigerator so i figured i’d try it on the computer, too, and i worked, kind of. mr. snickers left the room straightaway, but mittens just kind of hid behind the screen and i was squirting when suddenly there was a big flash and the whole thing shut off! mittens was acting kind of weird for a few days after that, but she never went nowhere’s near the computer again. the bad thing is it also didn’t work after that. i don’t know why–maybe the cats did someting to it.
i hope that helps.
Ok I know this will sound mean at first but keep reading. I had a friend who had a cat that would always jump onto the counter. And at first she would just squirt it with water. So try that, and if that doesnt work then gt duck tape and stick it on to where ever your cat goes. It will probably stop because they dont think things sticking to their feet. BUt it that doesnt work, then ok… get mouse traps, (dont freak out) and pad that snap thing with foam or something soft. And set them up under the desk when your cat jumps on, the traps will close without hurting him, and then he will stop i garuntee it.
Hope this helps!
Try sprinkling pepper in the area where he hangs out…or use citrus..like orange peels. You can also try putting foil down.
You can try putting double sided tape all over where you don’t want him going…. he wont like the sticky feeling on his paws, so he’ll stop hanging out there. You can try the foil paper, but my cat just moved it out of the way.
What harm is it doing for him to be there? He is following your scent, you should be flattered. Cats tend to do what they want. You can spray him w/ a spray bottle, it will work, the problem is, he will hate you, he will never forget. So, if you want to ruin your relationship w/ him, go ahead and spray him. (a spray bottle w/water, nothing else!!)
Whenever I have a problem with one of my cats near the computer I just spray a burst of air from one of those computer dusters. It is a can of compressed air sold at Office Depot. It makes a loud sound…..similar to a hissing cat and you don’t have to worry about water on your computer stuff. My cat runs fast. Just make sure you hold the can upright so nothing drips out and don’t spray it directly at your cat.
I’m betting that a strategically placed orangutan will solve the problem. If you can’t find one of those then try some citrus spray around the area….cats HATE citrus. If you DO find an orangutan though, let me know…I have a job for him. Thanks.
Now that’s a mouse trap
My cat used to do this. I just had to let him do it it was annoying but he soon got bored of it. Or maybe try to distract his attention with something else.
My comment has been awaiting moderation for a week now. I hope you can get to it soon. I have more to say.
Thanks,
Michael
Great, now I can’t remember what I tried to post. Anyway, I really like the double sided tape idea. It sounds like it would work well.
Try wolf urine, that will keep him away.
