How can I get rid of scented oil (the one from diffusers + sticks) from my wood desk?

November 20, 2009

I left the sticks on a piece of paper towel on my desks. Coming back from vacation I realized the little oil that was still on the sticks had leaked through the paper towel and had solidified and stuck to the desk. It is very hard and cannot get rid of it. There should be a solvent for it but I am afraid of ruining the desk.
Thanks

  1. Try heating up the spot with a blow dryer and then putting either salt, cornstarch, baking soda or talc powder over the oil stain. They all absorb oil and by heating it you liquify it again. What you want to do is draw the oil out of the woodgrain. You may need to do this several times depending on how deep into the wood the oil soaked.

Once you feel that you have drawn out most of the oil, wash the surface with Murphy’s Oil soap and then apply Scott’s Liquid Gold. The Scotts is an oil based product which will moisturize the wood, let it soak in and then wipe off the excess. It will blend in the dark remaining stain from the oil sticks and obscure it.
