My new place has one large room that will act as dining room and living room. I would like the two spaces to feel separate but I don’t want to use screens. Bookshelves are difficult because the backing would be visible from one side and that’s ugly. Any innovative ideas?

I’m thinking about covering my white bookcase and desk with vinyl tile to match my other furniture. Is it a good idea? Or would a wood stain be better?

my mom’s third floor apartment resembles more a storage room than a home. It is full of bookshelves full of books, heavy furniture, etc. she worries if the floor masy not withstand the weight. Is there like a maximium weight a floor can withstand? what is this called?
