Are there good ways to access power outlets behind bookshelves without cutting through the bookshelf?
November 1, 2009
I went with a hybrid approach. I bought power strips and plugged into the sockets. Then I bought "feet" for the shelf to raise it up 5 inches. I now have the best of both worlds.

run an extension lead from socket behind shelves so you can plug or unplug leads when you want. only catch is that you will have to leave permanently on behind shelves.
Problem solved.
Argh… tough dilemma. This is what I did because I did not want to drill a hole either. I removed ALL of the books, then moved the bookshelf and ran a low profile extension cord from the outlet. Then pushed it back into place and loaded all 100+ books back onto it again. Look at it this way, it gives you an opportunity to dust all those books and the shelves as well as the baseboards behind it.
Your first answer is the best solution but use a switched extension lead so you can switch of individual items
